Artist Statement
Sonja van Klaren
I create my work intuitively, yet not unconsciously. I usually begin without a fixed plan, guided only by a vague idea or a color that presents itself. I choose my materials and tools and start — even when inspiration is not yet tangible. It often emerges through the act of working.
I respond to what happens on the canvas or paper. The image grows through a dialogue with the material. Sometimes I intervene deliberately; at other times I allow the work to surprise me. Meaning arises precisely within this tension between control and surrender.
My background in screen printing trained me to think ahead, to structure and construct carefully. In painting, I search for the opposite: space for experimentation, for chance, for the unexpected. These two approaches — control and freedom — together shape my visual language.
Since retiring, my work has gained a new layer of significance. Where structure once defined my days, there is now openness. I explore that openness through organic forms, layered surfaces, and vivid color contrasts that reflect a process of letting go and beginning again.
I do not believe art needs to explain itself. Yet it can open something. My paintings do not present a single narrative; they offer a space in which the viewer’s own experience can resonate.
